In 1740, Jesuit priests founded a hamlet in this area, called Apiay Farm, where a process of civilization began on the part of indigenous Guayupes and tribes from nearby territories which were engaged in agriculture. Years later the Jesuits were expelled, the territory passed to the Spanish crown. Through this territory, merchants and ranchers moved from the high mountain municipalities to the plains, as they began to form hamlets around the nearby water sources and Apiay farm, since the lands were very fertile and special for livestock.
In 1840 or 1842 the settlers made the foundation of the hamlet with the name of Gramalote made by Esteban Aguirre and his family. The date of foundation is not yet clear, since the old documents that are preserved are few and in poor condition, because most were destroyed in a fire of 1890.
On October 21, 1850 the hamlet was renamed Villavicencio in honor of Antonio Villavicencio and Verástegui, hero of the Independence of Colombia and shot during the reconquest by order of Pablo Morillo. In 1860 Villavicencio is attributed the category of Village.
In 1904, the Monfortina religious community was established, which began the development process, building banks, schools, the printing press, the hospital and other buildings of importance to the community. Thanks to this, in 1909 the population becomes the capital of the Meta municipality.
In 1936, Villavicencio was connected to Bogotá by paved road. In 1959 he was granted the title of City and ratified as capital of Meta department. After this year, an era of cultural, economic, tourist and urban expansion of the territory and its surroundings begins. creating public spaces which grew the economy and today we know as the current city of Villavicencio.
HISTORIA DE VILLAVICENCIO
En 1740, sacerdotes jesuitas fundaron un caserío en esta zona, llamado Hacienda Apiay, en donde se comenzó un proceso de civilización de los indígenas guayupes y tribus de territorios cercanos, quienes se dedicaban a la agricultura. Años más tarde los jesuitas fueron expulsados, el territorio pasó a manos de la corona española.Por este territorio se desplazaban comerciantes y ganaderos desde los municipios de alta montaña hacia los llanos, a su paso comenzaron a formar caseríos alrededor de las fuentes hídricas cercanas y de Apiay, ya que las tierras eran muy fértiles y especiales para el ganado.
En 1840 o 1842 los colonos realizaron la fundación del caserío con el nombre de Gramalote efectuada por Esteban Aguirre y su familia. La fecha de fundación todavía no es clara, ya que los documentos antiguos que se conservan son pocos y se encuentran en mal estado, debido a que la mayoría fue destruida en un incendio de 1890.
El 21 de octubre de 1850 el caserío pasa a llamarse Villavicencio en honor de Antonio Villavicencio y Verástegui, prócer de la Independencia de Colombia y fusilado durante la reconquista por orden de Pablo Morillo. En 1860 a villavicencio se le atribuye la categoría de Aldea.
En 1904 se establece la comunidad religiosa Monfortina, la cual comienza el proceso de desarrollo, construyendo bancos, colegios, la imprenta, el hospital y otros edificios de importancia para la comunidad. Gracias a esto, en 1909 la población llega a ser la capital de la Intendencia del Meta. En 1936, Villavicencio queda conectada a Bogotá por carretera pavimentada.
En 1959 se le otorga el título de Ciudad y se ratifica como capital del Meta. Luego de este año, se inicia una época de expansión cultural, económica, turística y urbanística del territorio y sus alrededores. creando espacios publicos lo cual crecio la economia y hoy conocemos como la ciudad actual de villavicencio
